Perhaps it's because I have no history with these apparently well loved characters, but I didn't connect with this book. While the internecine squabbles among the RAAF’s hierarchy, and the difficulties faced by a clearly smaller air force peep through, it lacks the finely drawn synopsis and analysis of the RAN effort by Ian Pfennigwerth, and Ross Mallett’s instructive picture of the logistic problems and the solutions that overcome them. The story line was quite complex, what with the heroine's personal life intertwined with a large group of other significant characters, some with similar names. Jiménez successfully captures the confusion and isolation of his protagonist in an unembellished, straightforward narration.
